South Deep and STITCH WISE supply 50,000 masks

In every challenge lies an opportunity, and South Deep has called on a local business to answer to the growing need for masks in its host communities as the Coronavirus pandemic continues.

Stitch Wise is a company that was established to provide both employment and meaning for disabled mine workers. It began in 1996 as a sewing skills project, manufacturing rainwear for the local mines. As the working conditions for miners became more apparent, Stitch Wise looked at all the ways it could add value, through innovative protective wear, personal protective equipment and other concepts in mining support that enhance safety and reduce potential injury to the miners working underground.

In their pursuit of a constant flow of work for their employees, Stitch Wise quickly identifies a need and responds with a product that is often unique, and customisable. The current need for face masks to slow the spread of the Coronavirus is an ideal match to their skillset.

South Deep mine recently teamed up with Stitch Wise to supply 50,000 three-ply masks to the communities of Thusanang, Poortjie, Simunye, Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Kalbasfontein, Jachtsfontein and Hillshaven.
