South Deep face masks boost learner safety

In its efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, Gold Fields South Deep has been distributing face masks to the mine’s host communities, with particular focus on the youth. Cloth face masks were recently procured from local entrepreneurs and distributed in the Poortjie and Thusanang communities.

As schools are partially reopened amidst increasing COVID-19 infections, South Deep made sure that 150 youths and Grade 7 learners returning to Modderfontein Laerskool have reusable cloth masks to wear.

South Deep also continues to share disposable face masks with community members during interactions and by mid-June more than 2,000 masks had been donated.

We remind recipients that these masks—both reusable and disposable—are only effective if worn correctly, and all the time while in public, at work and at school.

South Deep cares about our youth and reconfirms its commitment to this generation as we mark Youth Day on 16 June.
