Gold producer Gold Fields plans to increase its embedded electricity generation capacity through wind energy at its South Deep operation in Gauteng.

To align with industry employer organisation Minerals Council South Africa’s safety focus areas of fall-of-ground incidents, transport and machinery incidents, and dust and noise controls, gold miner Gold Fields’ South Deep gold mine, in Gauteng, has implemented several initiatives and controls to enhance and ensure the safety of its workers.

Newly appointed Gold Fields executive VP for South Africa Bedford Mokoatle has told Mining Weekly the company will complete a feasibility study on wind power at the Westonaria-based South Deep mine within the next three to four months.

Dual-listed Gold Fields has permanently appointed Benford Mokoatle as executive VP (EVP) South Africa, after he served as the acting EVP for the region since July 2022.

Anglo American and Gold Fields were among the slew of mining companies that released results last week. Notably, neither company had a fatality at their South African operations, but employees were killed on the job in Canada and Australia.

Following the failed acquisition of Canadian precious metals Yamana Gold, Gold Fields says it will continue to pursue options to grow the value and quality of its assets – although it will likely shy away from another major acquisition deal.
