South Deep is deeply committed to the communities in which we operate, and in ensuring that our host communities’ benefit both directly and indirectly from the operations of the mine.
Not only are we committed to the targets we have made under the Mining Charter to identify and develop black-owned suppliers, but we also believe that should include our Host Community Suppliers, Regional Suppliers and National South African Based suppliers in line with Mining Charter 3 requirements dealing with ownership and local content. This includes BEE Compliant Companies, Historically Disadvantaged Person Owned and Controlled Companies which include Youth and Women majority ownership.
Procurement decisions are based on sound economic principles which is the right thing to do, and part of living up to our values. It is our intention to make a real and lasting impact on the development and support of sustainable, competitive and independent businesses that will be able to deliver mining goods and services, not only to South Deep, but to other businesses in the area, and beyond.
Our Host Communities fall within the Rand West Local Municipality, which includes Westonaria and Randfontein; and Poortje, which falls within City of Johannesburg. Regional Communities fall into the broader West Rand District Municipality which are those not already included in the above host description. This includes Carletonville, Fochville and Krugersdorp. National suppliers include the rest of Gauteng Province and South Africa in general.
The South Deep Business Development Centre (BDC) is a resource for our community members, where SMMEs may pre-register their interest in working with South Deep, and access a range of business services, training and advice.
The BDC is situated at South Deep Gold Mine, South Shaft next to the Engagement Centre. Operating hours: Monday — Friday 07:00 —16:00Read more
